Actress Julie Delpy

Paris-born Julie Delpy is a favorite leading lady among European and American directors.

Her breakthrough movie was 1995's Before Sunrise,, directed by Richard Linklater, in which she played a Frenchwoman who meets an American studying in Vienna (Ethan Hawke). They spend the wee small hours of the morning in Vienna getting to know each other in a very tender way. :-)

Marion Cotillard

The one and only. :-)

Before last month, French actress Marion Cotillard was known primarily to art film buffs for her roles in films such as Pretty Things and A Private Affair. Now that she's won the Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of torch singer Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose, she's a household word all across America.

Her American film credits include Big Fish (directed by Tim Burton), and she hopes to play Luisa Contini in the movie version of the Broadway musical Nine.

French actress Isabelle Adjani

For my first few subjects in this next go-around, I thought I'd take a trip to France, where they have beautiful women in virtually every corner of the country.

First up, Isabelle Adjani, who first caused a sensation in 1975 at the age of twenty when she played Victor Hugo's deranged daughter in Francois Truffaut's The Story of Adele H.

Mademoiselle Adjani has starred in several distinguished movies, including One Deadly Summer (1983), the futurstic thriller Subway (1985), and Camille Cluadel (1989). Her portrayal of the tragedy-stricken French sculptress in the latter movie won her a French César film award for best actress. Queen Margot in 1994 won her a César as well.

Her American film credits? Uh, she starred in the disastrous Ishtar from 1987, continuing a tradition of French actresses appearing in Hollywood's worst movies.
